Why Apple Music files are taking space on my me...

I'm trying to save some memory space on my Mac and I've found out this very strange thing. If I add a file to the library, it doesn't appear to be on iTunes folder, but it's taking space in the memory, like if I've downloaded it, even if I actually haven't. If I download it, it's not taking any extra space, but it just appears in the folder, as it was already downloaded, but hidden in a different folder. Shouldn't be the contrary the logical process? Is there any way to add a song to the library just for online listening, without the file filling my memory space?
