Cannot remove device from iTunes

I got an iPad mini 1 from a relative but the device got locked suddenly and requests that it either gets unlocked by the previous owner or the owner removes it from the list of devices on iTunes. However, when he loggs in på iTunes the device is not listed. How ca we solve the problem?
