what is the difference between the ipod touch password and the apple i.d password?
Since you do not clearly indicate what it is that you are trying to do, your iPod Touch has a passcode, that is what you use to just access the home screen. That is normally a 4 or 6 digit number. The Apple ID password is what you have set for your Apple ID.
If you have forgotten your iPod Touch passcode to enter the device, then you would need to follow the instructions here to remove it. If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
If you have forgotten the password for your Apple ID, you can start here, https://iforgot.apple.com
