Flashing folder with question mark

Flashing folder with question mark on iMac. Command R doesnt work.  Mac wont respond to any of the keyboard shortcuts during boot. It wont get past the folder with question mark.

usb keyboard or bluetooth? If bluetooth, try USB keyboard.

Could also try just r, instead of command + r .

 

Do you have a time machine backup? If so, try plugging in the backup drive.

if your mac predates recovery mode you may need to use the Disk Utility on the disks that shipped with your computer to examine the HD and make repairs if possible.

 

If your computer supports recovery mode but you are unable to get to it to recovery mode it may be due to enabling the Firmware Password.

You may be able to shut off the password (provided you know it) by getting to the recovery screen with the following keyboard commands:

Option-Command-R

Shift-Option-Command-R


if you do not know it you will need to bring your computer to an Apple Authorized repair center for it's removal.
