I tried to reset my MacBook pro to factory sett...

I have the older MacBook Pro, Model A1278 from 2009. It still works so I was going to give it to a younger sibling to use and wanted to wipe the disk so it would be like new. I shut off the computer, and turned it back on, holding down the command+R keys, and went into "Disk Utility" and erased the previous drive and created a new one. Now all I have to do is download the OS. When I click the option to do so, the OS thats showing is El Capitan. It asked me to sign in, followed the 2-step authentication, and thought it would download...it didn't. Keeps saying "item is currently unavailable." I tried several times on different days, still not working. I looked online for forums with similar issues, but everything is outdated and doesn't work. I tried creating a "recovery" usb like some websites said to do, but because my current OS is Sierra, and the older versions aren't available I can't do anything. Even going into the App Store and trying to download older OS versions, it says the item is unavailable. I didn't create a backup before erasing the drive because I didn't have anything on the computer I thought needed to be saved. Can this be fixed or do I have to bring it to the Apple Store? I want to try fixing it myself before taking it there because I don't know how much they're going to charge me and if they can even fix the issue if I bring it in...Please help me! Thanks in advance!
