Price to replace battery and fan on a 2012 13" ...

It seemed clear that my 2012 13" MacBook Air needed a new battery (not holding charge well) and probably a new fan (recently very noisy). I say probably as there could be other issues, but the point is I wanted a rough idea of the cost to replace both at the same time to decide if it's worth doing.

I spent ages on the phone being transferred around various parts of Apple, always to come up against an absolute refusal to give me any indication of price. I would have to go to an Apple Store Genius Bar (in my case Trafford Centre, Manchester, UK – a 125-mile round trip) to have a diagnostics check first. In the end I did that, my Air needs a battery and a fan, quelle surprise ! They quoted £107.50 for a battery, £14 for a fan, £69 for labour, £38.10 for VAT. A total of £228.60.

In the meantime, a local authorised repairer quoted £169 + VAT for the same work, i.e. £202.80. They say that I can leave the machine one morning and probably get it back the same day, if the parts are in stock.

Manchester said up to 7 days to do the work, and the clock starts ticking as you leave your machine, it is NOT possible to book a Mac in for a repair as you would a car. WHY NOT? In a 40+ minute follow-up call from a manager, Jack, today, that turnround time had gone up to up to 10 days.

No matter how many times I challenged this refusal to give an estimate for what I thought needed doing (every time I said I would understand if it was something different), the answer was always the same: Non !

Similarly, when I challenged the refusal to consider letting customers book work in for, hopefully, same-day work a week or two away, I was told repeatedly that that is Apple’s policy and it isn’t going to change.

I’ve used Macs for 20+ years, my sons use them, many people they know have been put onto them, one son even worked part-time for Apple a few years ago. His impression is that there is a certain complacent arrogance in Apple’s attitude: take it or leave it, we’re Apple. Sadly, I have to agree.
