Your system has run out of application memory.

This is the second time I've seen this message. I leave my iMac running in sleep mode overnight. When I activated the computer this morning I received the above message. It presented me a box with running applications and suggested that I force quit several. I was running Messages, Finder, Lightroom, Safari, Mail, BOINC Manager. I quit everything but finder and the computer is running fine. Why this message? I am running a late 2009 iMac with the latest version of the operating system on 16gb of memory.

It probably happened because you had run out of memory. There may have been open processes you didn't know about. Depending on how long your Mac is running and how many running processes you have, this can happen. Next time check you Activity Monitor. More frequent restarts will also help clear memory.

How much free space on your system drive?

People tend to associate this to RAM, but your mac can use more than the available RAM by using virtual memory. If the available space on the hard drive is exhausted, this can occur.
