I moved country, changed iTunes stores and now ...
Hi,I know about how to change country etc for purchases in iTunes, this isn't about that.
I had a UK iTunes account and bought apps there.
I've now moved to Australia and changed my iTunes account to Australia using an Australian credit card, and I've bought some apps here.
iTunes is telling me that I have a bunch of Apps I can update, though when I go to update them it says there's none available.
I've gone to the UK iTunes Store and clicked update, and there they are - but they won't download as I need to change my billing info again.
So, here's the question - is iTunes actually that limited that one account can only have one credit card linked to it?
I live permanently in Australia now, but have purchased over 100 Apps while in the UK... am I right in saying that every time I want to update an app I have to fill out all my UK credit card and billing information, update, then fill in all my Australian billing details again when I want to switch back to the Australian store... over and over again for the rest of my life!?
I understand some Apps won't be available in one country VS the other, that's not the problem here. This is with worldwide available apps - I can see the apps in the Australian store, but because I've bought them in UK I can't update them in Australia.
Change your old account back to U.K. and create a 2nd Australien account - up to 5 different accounts may be synced to a mobile device
Thanks Kay,
Though I have bought apps in both countries, with the one account name. Doesn't that mean that even if I start up a new account, I will have to repurchase apps?
i.e. If I change back to UK store with my original account, then open up a second account for the Australian store, all my Australian purchases made with my original account will not be available on my second account.
Surely the real solution is for Apple to allow multiple credit cards to be used on one account. I understand that that may make it harder for them to police international copyrights of the media they serve, but that can be done in other, albeit more complex, ways.
Ok, this is somewhat of a better work around I've found:
Starting in the Australian iTunes store, I go through the process of signing into the UK iTunes store up until the point it asks for my credit card information.
I then click the 'X' in the top left of iTunes to exit the store.
Now when I click on my Apps Updates button it shows me what UK Apps I have that are available to update.
You can't download these as at this point I've changed the store I'm viewing, but haven't officially switched accounts. Not to worry.
I write down the names of the UK Apps to update.
Then, use the 'search store' field in the top right of iTunes to search for one of the Apps.
Once you've found it, click to buy it / download it.
iTunes recognises that the App is already in your account and downloads it again for free….
… now I'm HOPING that that App is now fully within my Australian account… unfortunately only time will tell once there is a new update for it.
I'll let you know.
Steven did this work and have your app updates now "switched on" for you? I have the same concern as I am about to switch my iTunes account back to the UK but have bought many apps while in Switzerland. Thanks!
i would like to know that as well
Thx alot
This is annoying for me too - can't update my apps. My mess came about when I updated my address via iPhoto when I ordered some pics.
I've found a workaround that WORKS!
Thanks to what's probably a bug in the Apple Dictatorship, the App Store application on my iPhone allows me to update my Apps, regardless of what country I bought them in.
So, I went and synced every single App I own to my iPhone, and did an 'update all' via the App Store app. The next sync with iTunes copies the updated apps back to the iTunes library where they are now 'accepted' as being my apps, and I can update them as normal, through iTunes.
Hope this works for everyone.
The latest iTunes update makes this problem much more worrisome. If you bought an app in the UK and then moved to the US, the UK apps won't show up in your "purchased" items. I'm worried that when we hit iOS5 and everything relies on the server's impression of what your purchased items are, I won't be able to tell what apps have been updated on iOS or iTunes.
As it is now, I can't an app unless I delete it in iTunes and then go to manually download it again. Sigh.
Any further progress on this problem? I have the same problem: I switched from the Turkish app store to the US app store, and now I can't update any of my apps and I can't re-download them... Which is rather upsetting since I spent a not inconsiderable amount of money on them. Is that money simply lost now?
Anyone know of a fix for apps no longer being associated with an account after you change your credit card/country?
Hey Bowgart,
I've been bounced around to tons of apple support about this issue, with no lasting result. The best I got was that one support feller told me to rebuy all the apps on a new account with the country that I want and that he'd refund me. He did, but as part of the refund process all future downloads are denied updates.
In the end, I just made a completely new account and re-purchased the apps I consider essential.
Wow, that sounds really... terrible. I don't understand why changing credit cards/countries completely separates purchased apps from the account. I thought that was the purpose of having an account with Apple.
I guess I'll still try banging my head against tech-support, see if they've come up with anything new. What's the best way to reach them? Email or phone?
Let me try to recall.. Er.. I think I filed an e-mail support ticket first. Got redirected to telephone support and bounced back and forth a couple times after that.
Do let us know if you have any greater success!
I was driven mad by this... I had bought hipstamatic in the US store but once my credit ran out, I couldn't buy the new lenses... Was fobbed off with scripted answers from iTunes support until I eventually bit the bullet and bought the app in the UK store... Luckily, it kept all the lenses I'd bought in the US store and I was able to buy more in the UK store. Phew. Not sure if that will work for evey app and yeah, I ended up buying the app again, but at least I don't have to buy all the lense packs again.
The problem that I'm having is that I've spent... not an inconsiderable amount of money in the app store. Music and movies aren't such a big deal, but not having access to software that I've paid for is! I can't afford to buy everything over again.
I don't understand the point of having a single Apple account if it's locked into a specific country. When I buy software from anywhere else is doesn't matter what country that I'm in or which credit card I'm using.
The reason why I spent money in the app store in the first place was because it seemed like a good centralized place to buy software, where I could get updates, re-access the files, etc. Now it looks like a giant hole in my bank account.
