Recommended external backup 2017

Hello,

I've gotten older and Macs have changed.

I'm not even sure what to order for an external hard drive.

I have a late 2012 iMac, 1TB.

Will soon be purchasing both a MacBookPro 512GB, and an iMac, 1TB (2nd iMac for wife).

I'm THINKING I should get 2 6TB external drives and partition them three ways to back up each of the computers - switching the drives out monthly with a nearby off-property location (and, of course back up all to on-line services).

I've probably become too inept to do the backups via networking the hard drive kept at home, so will probably just physically move it from computer to computer each week, daily backups not being necessary for us.

But I've lost track of knowing or understanding "Thunderbolt," "USB3," or whatever. The last time I felt up to speed was with Firewire.

I'd like to be able to connect all three computers the same way (all Thunderbolt? All USB3?) if such a thing is still possible.

There was a time when I could process the technical reading to understand this stuff, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult with age.

Typically, a Western Digital external drive (1 or 2 TB is a huge amount of space) with a USB connection is the most straightforward, simple way to go.

As long as you keep an eye on the storage volume levels, a drive like that will last you for many years to come.

Using the native Time Machine app on each of the computers will allow you to use your space wisely.

1) The reason I mentioned a partitioned 6TB was to serve as bootable backups for three machines. Somewhen in the past, I read that a backup's capacity should ideally be twice that of the source. Anything to that?

2) Am I correct that Thunderbolt and USB are physically different connectors? Will USB on the older iMac be as fast as Thunderbolt? Has Thunderbolt been removed from MacBook Pro?
