Hunting for the right library...

Many years ago, I backed up all of my music and podcasts to an external hard drive and directed iTunes to it. No problem. During the course of many upgrades, iTunes has created multiple "previous iTunes library" folders with several .itl libraries, sorted by date (several have been created and modified on the same day?). Many libraries going back almost 5 years. Each "previous iTunes folder" has created another "previous iTunes library" folder within it. Many of these libraries are "greyed out", but the ones that are bold (that I can open) contain my playlists, podcasts, etc. but cannot locate the file associated with it (the exclamation! error). Ok, bear with me... When I locate the most recent library, updated and added podcasts, etc. are there, but I still get the exclamation error warning. BUT, the podcasts will play (although from the last saved date-resulting in my having to re-download all previous episodes) but the song files/playlists won't play. If I hunt around for awhile through these multiple previous library folders, eventually I will stumble into one where my music library works fine, and the podcasts play (although still need to be updated-some are even missing and need to be re-subscribed to). How can I get back to one "main" library that I can use for my music and podcasts (which I update daily)? I'm tired of hunting for the useable library (which seems to change constantly) and having to go through the process of re-downloading/updating/re-subscribing my podcasts. I would like to be able to open iTunes, listen to my music or podcasts-refresh them-close iTunes and not have to constantly go hunting through multiple libraries and refreshing/re-subscribing my podcasts. This issue has come up within the last year and has me totally baffled. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
