Apple Mail Rules: Can't see actions because box...

MacBook OS X 10.10.3 Apple Mail

When viewing/editing rules, I can't see the "Perform the following actions:" box there seems to be a problem with the way the dialog box is calculating the vertical space required to show the list of actions - new rules, old rules all show the problem to various extents.

I have the same problem but am still in Mavericks. People have been complaining of it since 2013. Also big problem, the rules start overlapping and so are impossible to see. How can Apple not fix this most basic problem? It's been a known issue for ages.

Also, when I close out of a rule and come back, the order of the actions has changed.

Any solutions to this? It just started happening to me too.

I don't think so; I've spoken with a number of level 2 advisors in AppleCare, and they're unaware of the problem. If enough people complain, I suppose they'll address it, but documenting your concern takes some work. A supervisor needs to send you a special program that can capture log activity on your computer while the problem is occurring. I'd pass on some screen captures as well. From there, the engineers can begin to take a look. Not sure I'm motivated enough to jump through all the hoops.

hi

the problem is not new. i have had this problem since before mavericks (probably since 2013).

i think we need to see if there is a common factor among us that is leads to this.

have the same problem as the original poster: where you can't even see or get to make a new Move To message rule.

but there is also a slightly different version of this well: in the past where i have created a Move To rule, now all these rules no longer show the Move To action, UNLESS i quit Mail then start Mail back up. so, in other words, Mail gives up showing the Move To rules when i have done some rules changing but then will again show the rules if i just restart Mail.

its bizarre but the basic problem has been around for a long while.

thanks

By updating my version of 10.10.5 with the latest security update I fixed this problem.  However, now the problem is starting again after I have a rule that added a bunch of conditions.  It appears to have reset the height of the second section during the update, but not fixed the problem for other rules after adding more conditions.  Once this occurs you cannot create any new Rules.

BEFORE:

System Software Overview:

  System Version:    OS X 10.10.5 (14F27)

  Kernel Version:    Darwin 14.5.0

  Boot Volume:    Macintosh HD

  Boot Mode:    Normal

AFTER:

  System Version:    OS X 10.10.5 (14F1021)

  Kernel Version:    Darwin 14.5.0

  Boot Volume:    Macintosh HD

  Boot Mode:    Normal

but now after the update I added a bunch of conditions to an existing rule it now fails on any new

or existing rules:

that have small lists.  Rules with any long list of conditions (that require a scroll bar), still work.

hi

here is what i have found on my system..

i have had the same problem now across several OS X systems, but, what i have discovered is that by simply quitting Mail and then even re-starting  Mail immediately, the problem goes away, temporarily, until I make around 15 or 20 changes or new rule additions. Over time the space between lines grows progressively smaller until you can't see the Move To line at all anymore. But quitting and re-starting it makes it useable for a time.

thanks

I got the same Problem as well,

dear Apple would you please give us at least a work around?

I find that users that have complicated rules with lots of actions, can simplify the rule using different criteria. If you give some examples of what you are trying to accomplish and what is causing you to add additional criteria, I can suggest alternatives.

Use "From is in group xxxx" rather than adding email addresses. You create a group for example for Announcements/newsletters. Add senders to this group.

Your rule would be From is in group "Announcements/newsletters"

Move to folder Announcements/newsletters.

If you are trying to deal with spam....

Use SpamSieve rather than try and build your own spam rule. https://c-command.com/spamsieve/

Thank you Azamino. It works!

Thanks for that @asamino

I wanted to just click Helpful but that doesn't work and let me guess, the @mention won't either

Just quit the application and open it again. Not too complicated.

I'm glad this works but I tend to leave my mail app open 24/7.  We shouldn't have to jerry-rig this as a fix!

Please note:

     1. I have notice that deleting an active rule will result in the perform action box to shrink continuously until the box goes complexly missing.

     2. Deactivate the rule before deleting, I have found that it seems to be the cure to the problem.
