I cant find where to backup my iphone 5 on itun...

I want to back up my iphone 5S to my pc.  When I open Itunes and select device, it offers the option of sync or backup but they are in grey and cannot be selected.  What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Is the iPhone connected via USB to the computer? If you sync over Wi-Fi, then you'll see the iPhone in iTunes, but you can't sync or back it up unless it's plugged in.

Have you previously backed up to iCloud?
