"Shared" Tab on the "Sidebar" in Finder LOST!!!
Hello all, it's my first time to post here. I am looking forward to getting your kind help!As the title says, I cannot restore the "Shared" tab in Finder now. Before I shared with a PC running Vista, I had been there on the Sidebar. But, after sharing with PC, it has disappeared. I tried reinstalling Leopard though, it still doesn't work. By the way, the "Shared" tab is indeed checked in Finder preferences.
Now, I'm totally upset by this. Could anyone give me a hand on this?
Thank you so much in advance!
I don't see "Shared" any where. Perhaps you could explain. Do you mean the sidebar?
The "shared" tab only shows up when something is being shared. If your PC is no longer available via the network and there are no other shared volumes, there will be no tab/
I also have a pc and laptop running Vista and they do not show as "shared" even though they are. I find I have to manually "connect to server" if I want to access them. It is a pain and I would love to know how I can get both of them to just show under "shared" automatically.
Sorry for the unclear post.
In Finder, you'll see a Sidebar on the left listing DEVICES, PLACES, SEARCHES FOR. The Shared tab should be on there as well. But now, it is gone after sharing with a PC running Vista, and never shows up again.
Thanks for the answer!
I thought so as well at the beginning. But in fact, even I share my MBP with that PC again, the Shared tab still doesn't show up. I have to use cmd+k to manually input the IP address of that PC. However, in the tour guide video of Leopard posted on Apple website, the tab does show up whenever it is shared or not shared.
It seems aliciar has the same problem as mine.
I run an all mac house and both other computers automatically show up as shared. When I am on the train, there is no shared tab. When I get to my office I see about 10 PCs in shared. So obviously there is an automatic function on the mac.
You might consider permissions repair to see if that fixes something.
Good luck!
thank you so much for your reply! I will see if that will work.
Still in the middle of nowhere......
Well I have made a discovery. If my mbp is the 1st computer to connect to the network, then when my pc and sony laptop connect, I can see them under the "shared" heading in Finder. Go figure.
Could it have something to do with the ip address of the mbp? I have set static ip's for all computers in my modem settings but the MBP is further down in the ip list.
I would love to be able to solve this one.
Well, I'll go try it, thanks!
Some told me this could be a modification to the system after updating Leopard to 10.5.2. I mean "automatic show-up of Shared". But, if this is true, then why was the Shared tab still not there after I reinstalled Leopard (10.5.1) some weeks ago?
How did you go?
I think we must be the only 2 having this problem.
no, it still doesn't work.
I am not sure if we two are suffering from this problem. Yesterday, I searched in the forum for similar threads, and I found one. However, unfortunately, the problem is not solved there either.
Well, i think i just let it go, too much energy and time wasted........ Once I have news, I will post it here.
Wish you good luck!

I assume you do mean the sidebar.
The Shared only appears when the computer recognises that there is another computer switched on with sharing enabled and connected to the local network. In my own case (2 Macs) if one computer is not started up there is no Shared in the sidebar but it comes when I start the 2nd machine.
You need to check both Connected servers and Bonjour computers I believe under the shared part of Finder preferences. You also need to check the appropriate boxes in Sharing (System Preferences).
Check also the firewall setting under Security (System Preferences). File sharing must be permitted.

All computers are shared. No problems seeing the mac on the pc and can easily do a manual connect to the pc from the mpb.
It is just annoying that it doesn't show up automatically under shared in the sidebar. As I mentioned in a previous post, sometimes it does as long as the mbp is the first to connect to the network, but this doesn't always happen.
As this is my first mac ever, what is this Bonjour? Thanks
