iMac 27" 2011 boots but display black

Hi, this is my first post, so please bear with me! recently I have experienced a big problem with my 27" iMac from mid 2011. I shut down the computer normally when going to bed last week, and then the next day I hear the normal start up chime at startup but then nothing happens. It appears that the display is completely dead, there is not any indents or shadows, it's completely black. I can hear the computer, so it seems like it boots normally, the problem is that I can't see anything.

I tried google and youtube but couldn't find a solution but decided to try some troubleshooting anyway. I have done NVRAM and SMC resets, tried entering diagnostic mode, unplugged the power cable, unplugged USB, ejected RAM - nothing. Then suddenly, after dozens of shut downs and start ups the display suddenly turns grey and I see the familiar apple symbol.  Lo and behold! I was extremely exicted and decided to restore a backup from time machine to make sure it wasn't a software issue, and even if the display itself died after a couple of minutes the restoration was successful.

Later, I managed to start the computer once again and did a first aid in disk utility. At first I thought the error was related to the display (I've had it replaced by apple a few years back because of shadows), but according to the panic report, it seems to be related to the graphic card. Does anyone know if there are any ways to solve this the easy way without it costing an arm and leg? I do realise that the computer is getting a bit old, but it's been working great all these years so it feels weird that it suddenly becomes unusable over night. It seems as if, when I have managed to start the computer, it is somewhat related to sleep mode (I have stupidly missed to remove sleep mode, and the result is that the display is dead once again and won't wake up), but there does not seem to be a formula to when it works. If it is graphic card related, isn't it a bit odd that it is not completely dead but seems to live a life of its own?
