Problems loading photos to iCloud Library

I am trying import some photos to my iCloud photo library via MacBook Pro but get a message saying insufficient disk space on MacBook Pro. Do these photos need to be loaded on to the MacBook Pro before they can be loaded to the iCloud Photo Library?

Any photos you add to iCloud photo library will be added both on your Mac AND in the cloud.

It's very important that you keep around 5-10% of your Mac empty at all times, otherwise you will begin to corrupt the data on it.

If you are short of space on the Mac consider the following options.

Optimise Photos - Mac

Photos Preferences iCloud Optimise Mac Storage

Store In Cloud

(Apple Menu) About This Mac Storage Manage Store In Cloud

Optimise Storage (iTunes)

(Apple Menu) About This Mac Storage Manage Optimise Storage

Optimise Mac Storage

System Preferences iCloud iCloud Drive Options Documents Optimise Mac Storage

Thanks Winston. I have already carried out your recommendations. Once the photos are in the iCloud Library can i delete them from the Mac without deleting them from the cloud?

Thanks Bill

No.

With iCloud Photo Library enabled, you cannot delete a photo on one device (or at iCloud.com) without deleting it from every device that uses iCloud photo library (and iCloud.com). In order to save space on your mobile devices (and indeed your Mac if you wish to do so) turn on optimisation for photos on these devices (settings > photos & camera > optimise storage on your mobile device and Photo preferences > optimise storage on your Mac)

Optimisation is dynamic, it reduces the resolution of your photos as and when needed, so you may not notice it occurring at first. However, when it is needed, it is very effective and users have reported libraries being optimised to much less than 10% of their original size in some cases. My own library is about 9% of its original size on my phone.

Ok. Thanks for the explanation. Looks like I will have think of another way of creating some space on the Mac.

Regards Bill
