IOS 11 ipad Air screen unresponsive / broke / n...

Ipad Air was working fine, plugged in to update to ios 11 and charge. After was totally unresponsive. Did hard reset holding power and home button, then did the hold it longer until it shows plug into itunes and did restore 3 times in a row, still unresponsive. Managed to get it working no idea how later on. Turned find my ipad off so I could do a backup and full reset to see if that was problem. Reset, worked fine then turned on this morning and whole screen is totally inresponsive and “bricked”. Apple suggested taking into a store to pay £250 for a repair which iOS 11 likely caused. Any one have any ideas before I tell son its broke for good and deal with the meltdown? Thanks
