iTunes does not sync with iPhone built

I listen to several podcasts on my iPhone 6 (v10.3.3). However, I am unable to view the podcasts on my iTunes for playback. Instead, I have a standard screen that says: "Podcasts" with two checkboxes to sync all podcasts (both boxes are checked). I can view (but not listen to) the episodes listed when the device is connected to the computer. But I want to be able to listen to the podcasts that I start on my iPhone separately on iTunes. I'd also like to save/download some of my favorite podcasts to iTunes since I have the space to store them on my Macbook (not my iPhone).
