Headset mic on new MBP 15" (2017) unusable low

Hi,

I've just received my brand new MBP 15" and I was looking into why my headset cannot be used anymore because people wouldn't hear me. So I was looking into a number of different things and figured out, dass the mic does actually work, but even with the input volume set to maximum in the sound preferences a very loud sound would only saturate 4 bars on the level meter. The very same headset works fine on my MBP 17" (2011), an MacBook Air and various other devices (other brand notebooks, my iPhone 6, ...). Also it does not seem to be the 3.5mm socket itself since another headset I just tried also works perfectly (it's easy to saturate the bar with the input volume set to half).

I can try a few other headsets but it would be great if I could use my regular set of Trinity IEMs...

You need to change the Output volume in Sound Preferences, not the Input. If that doesn't work, go to Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > make sure the settings are correct there.

Sorry, I don't get that. Why do I need to change the Output volume if the microphone Input level is too low?

The headphone jack on a 2017 MBP is supposed to be output only, as in only headphones will work, not a mic. The mic is not supposed to work with it at all. You're saying the headset/mic in question and a different one actually work? I'm stumped as to why that would be....

Also I'd consider it a bug if it didn't support that but still detects an external Microphone when plugged in and switches automatically to it (instead of say, sticking with the built-in microphones -- which would actually work for me if it was possible to select that configuration). Here's a screenshot showing that the headset with mic is correctly detected and you can see the bar showing how high I can get the signal when smacking it really good...

I don't have a 2017 so I can't test another one. Hopefully someone with a 2017 and a mic will stop by and share their experience. I'm at a complete loss to explain what's happening with yours.

To recap: The only headphones which do not work correctly on my new Mac (but sure do work on anything else I could test them with) are my good Trinity IEMs. I guess that's a sign I should start using my high end IEMs which don't have a mic so it would use the built-in mics instead...

I have the MBP touchbar 15-in and have this exact same problem. I had a pair of Sennheiser momentum IE that worked fine, so never noticed. However, I lost it and picked up another one (1More 3 driver, which actually is quite nice) and bumped into this issue. As my earbuds worked fine, thought it was the headset issue.. so returned. Then got another one and same issue.. So researched and came here. Seems like an Apple bug?
