A file was saved over an original by mistake.  How can I recover the original file?

When you say a file was saved over an original ..... you had the original open, you did something to it, then saved it by mistake? The only way to recover the original would be if the program you were using saves versions of a document, or if you have the original on a TIme Machine or other backup.

My son wrote an essay and saved it to a Word file.  He was separately working on a table in the program "Pages" and then saved it to Word under the same name as his essay (replacing the essay). 

Assuming your son is working on your OS X 10.6 iMac.

If Pages was setup to automatically create a backup of the file when saved, you should be able to look on the disk for that file name with "backup of" appended to the file name.  Otherwise, unless Word saves versions of a document (I'm not familiar enough with Word to know), so that an earlier version of the document is available, the original document is written over and gone.

Do you use Time Machine to backup your system? There may be a copy of the essay there from the hourly backups. 

Time Machine is very very nice....it will save you....and unlike other windows type backups I have tried to rely on, it actually works, and is very easy to use.

I looked all over the internet, where solutions directed towards already having a back up system installed on your computer, like Time Machine, installing iWork to prevent a future scenario and/or having the 'info' or 'revert to' option on your device. It is to my understanding that Mac doesn't provide a 'revert to' or 'info' tab. There are softwares, that work great for retrieving data lost because of deletion or corruption for example but I needed something that could provide older versions of a saved document. I don't usually go on forums but felt utterly compelled to put the solution online because it was so utterly devastating to have something like this happen. I downloaded ISkysoft Data Recovery and I've retrieved my work! Online you can find a trial version, but very important to note is that the ones you cannot preview-named in digits are the ones you are looking for! If you find one closest to the work you want, like 00205638, make a search for 00205 once the scan has finalised so that you can skip the lengthy process of checking all the documents!
