is my imac dead?

Got a new desk. Turned off my iMac, it had been working fine prior to turning it off. Unplugged everything. Moved the old desk out and the new desk in. Put everything where I wanted it. Plugged my iMac back into power; turned it on and it makes the "welcome" sound; apple icon appears; it starts to load; stalls loading about 2/3 of the way through and shuts down. Is my iMac dead?

I've run disk utility and all disk check out "ok", except the "mac hd". "Failed" shows up. I can't reinstall OS; it won't allow me to.

Is it dead?

The Mac HD is where the operating system for your Mac is installed. If it is has failed, it will have to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled plus all of your applications and data from your backup.
