Smart Cover scratched my iPad Air screen

Has anyone else had the Smart Cover scratch their iPad Air screen?  I am very careful with my iPad, and the scratch was not there yesterday.  I use the Smart Cover.  It really is not a smart design to have the part of the cover that goes against the screen be the same part that sits on the desk or where ever the iPad is being placed.  I have tried flipping the cover the other way, but the magnet does not hold and it falls over any time I try touch the screen.  I use my iPad for work, so I have it sitting upright most of my day.  This is really frustrating.  While I have the Apple Care, I do not want to have to pay $100 to get the screen replaced.  It's a small scratch, but it's very visible, particularly when typing notes/documents/emails.  I overpaid to have an Apple-brand cover, just because I thought this would be the safest thing for my iPad.  I am thoroughly disappointed.  Now my $930 iPad is permanently damaged.

I have the smart case, basically the same as the cover, and have yet to experience a scratch in over three years of use.

If it bothers you, you don't have much choice. Isn't that part of the reason you bought Applecare+?

You did not overpay, you paid what Apple charged. No cover is going to protect 100% of the device. The scratch could have come from anything besides the cover. Any cover is better than no cover.

Uh, no. You can have the device replaced with a refurbished model. New case, battery and screen. To get the device replaced is only 10% of the cost of a new device. Use your Applecare+ for what it was intended. Otherwise you paid more for Applecare+ than you did for the cover yet complain about the price of the cover.

I have exactly the same problem. A couple of weeks ago I pick up my iPad Air and all of a sudden there are a number of scratches in the middle of the screen. I hadn't done anything that was different. A grain of dust or sand must have gotten caught under the cover and scratched the screen.

@Apple - this is a flaw in your design. Will you replace the screen / iPad?

Anytime there is a cover that fits against the screen there is the possibility of dirt getting between the cover and screen. If that dirt is particularly abrasive screen damage might be the result. However in having and iPad 2 for over two years and an iPad Air for a year and having a leather Smart Cover of each,I have not experienced any screen damage. I do check and clean the covers periodically.

I have a simliar issue. I have a 12.9 iPad Pro and the side of the device where the Smart Cover attaches to became all scratched up. Looks like the magnets that connect to the side of the iPad actually went all the way through the plastic and it's now rubbing against the side of the iPad leaving really bad scratch marks on the it. pretty horrible to see on such a beautiful device. Will setup an AppleCare appointment to see what they can do.
