Painfully slow MacBook Pro. EtreCheck says "poo...

I've been doing everything possible to fix my painfully slow MacBook Pro. It seemed like the problem started after loading Sierra a few months ago, and has only gotten worse since then. I've reloaded Sierra, didn't help. I ran disk first aid and didn’t find anything. I reset the SMC and PRAM. I tried booting in safe mode and it was just as slow. I also made a test user and it was just as slow.

I read about EtreCheck on this forum so I ran it. It agrees with me that performance is "poor." Can someone interpret the results (below) and give me some tips for fixing my MacBook Pro? Thanks so much. :-)

There should only be a single hosts file .  A host file is first checked by a web browser PRIOR to using DNS to match a URL with an IP address. Additional entries would either be added by you purposely or some form of malware to redirect the browser to a malicious web site.

A number of things here:

  1. You have application, starting up after login, that are no longer supported since OS X Yosemite.
  2. A number of items are not being started due to lack of sufficient memory in the System Agents & Daemons area.
  3. You have a glut of Internet plug-in installed in your web browser. Check to see if you still need them and remove any that you don't
  4. You have a number of third-party applets running in System Preferences. Again, check to see if you need them and delete those you don't.
  5. Your backup disk that you use for Time Machine is too small.
  6. Finally, you have had a number of system crashes that have been reported.

Your biggest issue is lack of RAM: 4G is borderline to run OS Sierra. Your Mac's RAM can be upgraded. Hence, you should get 8G of RAM, which will speed up things significantly. Additionally, you can replace your HDD disk with a much faster SSD to speed up boot time.

Or you invest in a new Mac...

Thank you, I'll get some more RAM. I might as well fix this extra junk too.

Thank you for all of this - very, very helpful. I'll work on cleaning things up. Much appreciated.

Just to encourage you.... I have an early 2011 MBP and with 8 Gig RAM its a joy. I am thinking of going up to 16 Gig but no reason at present.

I had to clear out a load of old trash too to get it running well - No Adobe! You do seem to be using high end apps and extensions which you perhaps don't need.

I am sure that following the advice will help but rely join 3 freebies for maintenance: Etrecheck, Malwarebytes and Onyx and all will be well.
