Slow movement of file icons

I just upgraded to Sierra, and discovered that moving file icons has become very slow. Whether on the desktop or within a window, I can select a file icon instantly, but if I attempt to move, even a small distance, there is a long pause, and I often get the beach ball, before the icon jumps into position. This happens whether I am moving the icon couple of millimeters of right cross the window.

The same thing happens if I move a file between windows. There is a long delay, then a 'Preparing move [location]' dialog appears, with a process bar. Another long pause, then a quick movement of the bar and the icon jumps to the new location. Same with a copy operation. Moving to and from the Trash by click and drag is likewise slow. File used for test was 8K on disk, 699 bytes in content, so it's not big files. Moving file to Trash by Command+Delete was also slow. Opening Info dialog box about the file was normal speed.

I have also started getting VERy slow Save As... dialog box speeds, slow opening, and then slow to populate. The beach ball is regularly appearing.

Any ideas?

Hello, N.W.J. Hazelton!

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.  I see from your post that you've been experiencing some slowness during file management activities on your MacBook Pro, ever since you upgraded to macOS Sierra.  I know I personally want to be able to move, copy, and save things quickly, without a lot of rainbow cursor spinning going on, so I can see why you posted.  I would be happy to help.

When my own MacBook behaves this way, I have found a System Management Controller (SMC) reset has helped.  If you're not familiar with how to do that reset, see the following link:
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If you still observe the same behavior after that reset, then starting up in safe mode can tell you if a program or process might be causing the delay.  Follow the instructions here, and test your moving/copying functions while booted in safe mode:  macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode

If your MacBook Pro works fine while in safe mode, restart normally and check to see if the issue has been resolved.

Have a great rest of your week!

Hi Becky,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, the SMC reset didn't change anything (even done twice), and the icon movements are slow in Safe mode, and when rebooted again, they remain slow.  Similarly, the slow Save As... and Open... dialog boxes remain. These occur in Word, Excel, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (so far). Preview is slow to open.

It should be noted that the slow dialog boxes problem was present before the upgrade to Sierra, but the slow icons problem is something new, only since the upgrade.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Bill.

Thanks for getting back to us, Bill, and thanks for giving those steps a try.

We're wondering if maybe some background processes might be causing your MacBook Pro's current issues.  Please see these articles for some more tips:

macOS Sierra: If your Mac runs slowly
Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Let us know how that goes!

Hi Jameson,

Activity Monitor indicates this window in Safari is using 2% of CPU, and other than occasional transient peaks of up to 17%, that's the largest activity. Memory used is <7 MB of 16 MB physical RAM. Low disk usage and network usage (Dropbox is the biggest network user). Word, Safari, Calendar, Activity Monitor are running. There is still slow icon movement and dialog box activity.

When Save As... is called in Word, Activity Monitor notes that the 'Application is not Responding.' Interesting. 39 seconds to get Save As... dialog box to open in Word, 31 seconds to populate new directory when changed. Meanwhile CPU activity is below 5% the whole time this is happening. (312 processes and 1,278 threads at this time.) But normal Save operations and moving windows on screen are as quick as always.

Cheer,

Bill.

Hi again, Bill!

You've done a lot of great troubleshooting so far!  Next, it would be helpful to determine if this is ONLY happening in your user account, or if it's a system-wide issue.  To do that, create a test user account, using the instructions found here:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Once you log into that account, see if the behavior is still present.  If not, then that tells us that there's something in your user profile causing this to happen.

Take care!

Hi Joe,

Ah ha! Yes, in a different account on the same machine (and while my main account was still running), icon moves are the right speed, and Save As... dialog box in Word opens and populates very quickly.

Coming back to my main account, slow icon moves and dialog boxes, as before.

Very suggestive!

What's next?

Thanks and cheers,

Bill.

Bill, you've done a fantastic job of working with us to isolate this issue to only your user account.  That information will help us know exactly how to resolve it.  Please Contact Apple Support and let us know there that it only occurs in your user account, not your test account.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

FYI I have the exact same problem on a Mac mini late 2014.
