Mail constantly downloading & deleted messa...

Hi

I know these issues have been addressed many times here but it was mostly long ago, and nothing I've tried works, nor has my ISP's tech support guy been able to figure it out either. So here we go again. I had to restore my desktop (note: we are NOT talking about iOS here) a couple days ago.

When I launched Mail after that, accounts populated with lots of old emails. I promptly deleted them but they just as promptly returned. Even if I simply click on an email to read it, it'll soon get "redelivered" and be restored to unread again. I've tried just about every fix suggested and here's where I'm at now:

But first, note that none of my accounts are Gmail accounts, so no need to suggest heading there. On my desktop, all these accounts are POP. On my phone IMAP.

1. Mail says it's downloading new messages (the number has varied throughout the day) REPEATEDLY yet no new messages actually appear.

2. Under MailBox Behaviors, simply to not lose my mind, I've selected to remove copy from server immediately after retrieving messages. However I don't want this because the emails then never land on my phone so long as I have Mail open on my desktop. Also, I share an email account with my son, and I usually see emails before him, so I don't want them removed before he sees them.

3. I just want it like it was. Emails would come to both phone and desktop regardless of whether desktop app was open. Anything I did to them on my desktop had no bearing on them on my phone. Now, when I delete from desktop, they also delete from phone. However, vice versa, if I had things on my phone that hadn't yet arrived on desktop because I had Mail shut down there, I could delete them off the phone and they wouldn't download to desktop once it got fired up.

Does anybody have a fix? I will be eternally grateful.
