Trying to reinstall OS

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro that's been super slow. I decided to erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X Yosemite from online, but every time I attempt to reinstall, I get a box saying that it's temporarily unavailable.

Is it just not compatible with my dinosaur laptop?

Any ideas?

Yosemite is compatible with Early 2008 MacBook Pro's provided you have disk space to facilitate the install and Apple recommends 2GB RAM. More than 4GB RAM is better. If you did not own Yosemite at the time it was publicly released it may not be legally obtainable from Apple any longer - but I can't verify this statement since I own Yosemite and it's in my history and I don't have a Mac with an OS that predates Yosemite where I can browse to it.

if you are getting the "item not available" it could be the item is no longer available from Apple in your location, it could be your account is not associated with an account that previously had ownership of os 10.10, it could be you are tying to download on a Mac with an OS that post-dates OS X 10.10.

Your computer predates recovery mode so if you already have a copy of Yosemite in your possession or associated with your Apple ID you can make an USB installer from another Mac with that image

if that is not an option you can use the disks that came with the computer at the time of purchase to install the version of OS X that shipped with your computer. If your installers were 10.6.x you will need to update to 10.6.8 before you can update to Yosemite

If your computer shipped with 10.5.x you may need to purchase OS 10.6 from Apple in order to perform an update from 10.6.8 to 10.10.
