allow iPad to access files on an external hard ...

I have a WD Passport for Mac, not wireless. I have an iPad mini. I also have a power pack that can be connected to source. I would like to travel without bringing my computer along, but need access to files stored on the external hard drive. Can I do this with simple purchase of connectors? I do not want to jailbreak the iPad, and that seems to be the most frequent solution suggested online.

If I can't do it, what would a recommended purchase be - e.g. if I buy a wireless drive can I access files - I am not particularly interested in photos or videos, just my own work, mainly Word, pdf and possibly Powerpoint files.
