Could not load Display preferences pane

Since installing Sierra, I'm trying to lower the brightness of my iMac but I get the "could not load Display preferences pane". Reading about it on the forum, I decided to reinstall Sierra, but I can't since the disc drive I'm trying to re-install it on has the latest update (10.12.1) so it will not let me reinstall.

Any suggestions.

Yup, thanks; The safe mode restart worked. I can adjust the brightness now under safe mode but not under normal mode, but at least it works; Thanks

Restart in Safe Mode. See if the display preference pane opens. Then restart normally and try again.

If you need to reinstall you may Do it by restarting in recovery mode.

we had this yesterday (we're running OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan) ...

simple Restart sorted it ...
