iTunes keeps downloading old podcast episodes. ...

I recently got some great advice from another member of the community about an issue I was having with iTunes. Unfortunately, there is still one issue that I can't seem to resolve.

     I listen to a lot of podcasts. When I open iTunes, it immediately begins downloading old (and recent) episodes I already listened to a long time ago. Many, many episodes. Sometimes this download session lasts all day. If I leave it alone, eventually iTunes will finish downloading and that's it, everything is fine. I'll turn off "download episodes" for each podcast, mark as played, unsubscribe, and/or delete certain podcasts that are now defunct (or hold no interest to me anymore) add a couple of new podcasts and subscribe to them, plug in my iPod (which is -granted-, an old 4g mini with the click wheel), download, turn off iTunes, remove my external library (hd), and be on my merry way. When I come back, access my library from my external hd, and open iTunes, everything that I had previously done has been undone. It's like I never did anything. Deleted podcasts are back, iTunes is downloading all of those same episodes again, settings have reverted, new podcasts are gone, etc., etc., ad nauseam. In fact, when I access my library on my external hd, the file date is stuck on 9-19-17. I feel like Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day".... My music seems fine (although I haven't added anything in a long time). Just this absurdity with podcasts. I've tried deleting everything in my iTunes downloads folder, tried nearly every configuration with the settings for each podcast and in preferences, but... Same thing. Why is iTunes (12.6.2.20) doing this? How can I get out of this loop? It's not practical to keep my external hd tethered to my laptop indefinitely, but that's what I've been doing (for as long as I can!). I would really like to get off of this grotesque iTunes merry-go-round.
