Watch OS 4 with iPhone Music

My watch (original 42mm sport) started doing something different when I play music on my iPhone after I updated it to watch os 4. Now, EVERY time I start playing music on my iPhone (in the car over bluetooth or usb, or anywhere when its just the phone's speaker), the music controls automatically show on the watch. This would be convenient if battery life supported it but it completely drained my battery over a period of just 5 hours and there was nothing I could do about it. I tried tapping the side button and closing out of the music app but it comes back eventually. I do a lot of driving for a living and music is a big part of that, so if this can't be fixed I'm going to end up back with a mechanical watch. I don't see any point in wearing a watch with a dead battery half the day, everyday. So is there any way to prevent the music app on the watch from opening and draining my battery just because my phone is playing music? I've seen normal battery drain when the watch is connected to my phone without music playing.

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wake Screen > turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps.
