Sleep/external display issues with Elgato Thund...

I have an Elgato Thunderbolt dock, original version, not 2. I use it with my MBP in clamshell mode, with an external NEC EA244WMi display. When I don't use the dock, the MBP and NEC work perfectly. With the dock, it works but after MBP goes to sleep, I always have issues with NEC display not getting signal.

I've been in touch with Elgato support for weeks; they've sent me a replacement unit, and Thunderbolt cable. I've done all kinds of troubleshooting. It's really driving me crazy. Wondering if this dock just isn't so hot, or if it's an issue with MBP. I've run Apple diagnostics on the MBP; no problems.

Often I can't get a signal to NEC display, even when I open the MBP and confirm that it's awake. Usually power-cycling the dock fixes that. A new issue that has appeared, is that the MBP won't wake up, even if I unplug everything from it. I can tell that it's on, because when I hit the brightness key the black screen gets slightly brighter.

Without Thunderbolt, the MBP and NEC display have no issues. Just trying to figure out if it's the dock or the MBP or both. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
