With the new GPS feature on the Series 2 watch and in order to have the "Route" to appear under the summary of your workout in the Activity app, do you need to carry your iPhone with you on your runs, rides, walks, etc? The runs I've completed without my iPhone and just my watch, the Route is not provided in the summary of the workout. Even though, on a run that I just completed while carrying my watch and iPhone, the route did not appear under the summary of the workout. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and if indeed you do your runs or rides with only your watch (no iPhone), the map of your route won't be provided in the summary....

Apple Watch can record a route map when recording workouts via the built-in Workout app under the Outdoor Run, Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Cycle and (for Series 2 models) Open Water Swim workout types.

 

Apple Watch Series 2 models have built-in GPS, so it is not necessary to take your iPhone along in order for the route map to be recorded.

 

Workout results are synced to the Activity app on your iPhone after your workout, once the devices have reconnected (automatically). To review your workout:

 

  • On your iPhone, in the Activity app, tap on the Workouts tab > tap on a workout to review the results > to view your route, tap on the map icon at the foot of the workout summary.

 

If the route map is not currently being recorded, the following steps may help:

 

 

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:
    • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
    • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
    • If each setting is already enabled:
      • Try briefly turning off Location Services and then turning it back on again.
      • Try briefly changing the setting for Apple Watch Workout to Never and then back to While Using.
    • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

 

Hi,

i have the same problem, but not every time. Sometimes the route shows in the app and sometimes it doesn't. I struggle to understand why.
