My current email address is trapped in an Apple...

I have purchased my music/apps etc with an Apple ID that is associated with a very old email address which I do not use anymore. Unfortunately at some point (probably in frustration at the ongoing Apple/Me/Cloud identity debacle) I created a new ID with my correct/current email address but I never used it for anything except my daughter's SIM-less device (she did not have an email address at that time).

I continued to purchase stuff with my 'real' ID but as the years went on I just don't even open my old mailbox anymore. It's 99.99999%spam. Unfortunately Apple won't let me add my current email address to my Apple ID because it's being used by the second/obsolete ID. It also won't let me delete the second ID or change its email address.

I am actually not expecting anyone to solve this. I am just hoping someone from Apple reads it and realises how stupid it is. It should be possible to delete an unwanted ID and use that email address against another ID.. god forbit merge accounts - it's not as if they are giving anything away for free, we have already paid for the apps.

I am just hoping someone from Apple reads it

Accounts can't be merged. When you buy items from the store you are only buying a license to use it on that account, before accounts could potentially all of the content providers will probably have to agree to allow it.

It also won't let me delete the second ID or change its email address.

Accounts can't be deleted, but why can't you change its primary email address : Change your Apple ID - Apple Support ?

Thanks King Penguin,

when I try to change the email address to the one I want to use, it won't let me. Now I am grateful for your reply because it made me try in on my phone instead on browser and I realised that I was reading the error message wrong. I thought the error was saying I couldn't use the address I want to use because it was associated with another ID, but what it is actually saying is: 'Your new Apple ID cannot be the same as your notification email address. Choose a different email address.'

So the next question is, for the life of me, I can't see or change my 'notification email address'.. If I can temporarily change it to something else, presumably I can change my Apple ID to my preferred/primary email address.

Now I think of it, does the Apple ID have to be an email address? or could it be something else?

Now I think of it, does the Apple ID have to be an email address?

Yes it does, it has to be a valid email address that you have access to, you will be sent a verification email to that address which you will have to access.

Your new Apple ID cannot be the same as your notification email address. Choose a different email address.'

Email addresses are managed via https://appleid.apple.com : About your Apple ID email addresses - Apple Support

If you use two-step verification or two-factor authentication, you have a notification email address, not a rescue email address. With two-factor authentication and two step verification, you don't need a rescue address. You can also use these steps to add or edit your notification email address.

Thanks for your reply. I am on the 'manage' page and it won't let me change the notification email address. I have added my phone number to the contactable at and the email address in the contactable at section is not the one I am trying to use as my Apple ID..

Still when I try to change the ID, it says 'Your new Apple ID cannot be he same as your notification email address'. I don't see any 'notification email address' field that I can edit. I also just don't get why you can't use the name@primarydomainiwanttouse.com as both Apple ID and notification address. The 'just in case' address should be the back up.

Are you using 2-step verification or 2-factor authentication ? I'm not using either, so not sure where it shows, but is there a security section on the account on https://appleid.apple.com ?

I also just don't get why you can't use the name@primarydomainiwanttouse.com as both Apple ID and notification address. The 'just in case' address should be the back up.

Apple have decided that it has to be a unique address on an  account

Hi there. Did you ever manage to solve this?

I am struggling with a similar problem.

I set up a brand new apple ID and wanted to associate my main (non apple) email with this new account.

I get the message: "invalid email. This email address is not available. Choose a different address"

The email address (yahoo) I am trying to associate to the new apple ID was previously associated with an old apple ID. I have deleted it from the old apple ID account, I have signed out of everything on my devices (icloud, facetime, imessage, itunes), but I still cannot associate this email with the new apple ID - my gut feeling is that the apple ID servers may take a while to acknowledge that the email in question is now 'free' to be associated to a new account.

The weird thing is that I have successfully added this email as the 'rescue email' in the new apple ID account, but I cannot add it as a 'contactable at' email address.

I thought this was a five minute job, 4 hours later I am still trying!

Same here, I had the address I want to use in the list of notification addresses, removed it, but when I try to change the email address for my Apple ID, as the current one will be closed, it keeps on whining about the new address being a notification address!

All very nice that Apple tries to keep me safe, but if I'm using 2 step authentication, I should be able to do what I want, right?

Aaarghh
