Calendar Default Alert

I am trying to adjust moving from MacOS 10.6 to 10.12.

I am having trouble getting Calendar to work the way I want it to and it used to do.

For some of my activities, I want an alert 2 weeks in advance, 1 week in advance, and two days in advance.  These activities occur several times through the year.

So I created one event, added the custom alerts.  I then copied and pasted these events throughout the calendar year.  Now when I go back, each of the events that I copied and pasted have lost the custom alerts.  They all revert to the default alert.

If I go to preferences, I do not have an option of changing the default alert to anything other than the few that Apple allows me - not that I want this type of warning for all my other activities throughout the year.

I used to be able to do this.  Now Apple has taken this option away.

Hello Lawrence,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to make custom alerts for an event in Calendar for Mac and then copy and paste the event, as the pasted events are not keeping the custom alerts. I tested this myself and was able to copy and paste events and keep the custom alerts, so this is possible and your next step is to narrow this issue down.

First, use safe mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Cheers!

I tried the Safe Mode (for another issue).  It took a long time to boot.  I did not know that was because it did all those functions at startup.

No change in the Calendar.  I created an event with two alerts.  1 day before and 15 days before.  I copied and pasted that event.  New event had only the 1 day before alert.

Under Preferences, I am only allowed to have one alarm for each Event,  All Day Event, or Birthday.

It looks to me like Apple has removed some useful features.

Thanks for replying, Lawrence, and that additional info, it really helps! Since this didn't work or resolve your issue after starting up in safe mode, your next step is to make a backup of your personal data and put a fresh copy of macOS on your Mac using OS X Recovery mode, as that will overwrite these system files causing the issue.

As we mentioned before, we tested this and were able to copy and paste events and retain the custom alerts, so this is possible in Calendar for Mac in macOS Sierra. Let us know the results of this test. We'll help you get through this. Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

What is going on with the Quality of MacOS, Becky, when a seemingly minor issue such as Calendar Alert Defaults is to Reinstall the OS? I have found that process to be a total pain in the neck that takes away HOURS of my time!!! I just did a Reinstall a few months ago & I am now having this Calendar Alert Default issue too. Why can't one just Re-Install the Calendar app??? Seems like MacOS needs to be Re-Architected such that it is more Modular. I have been a loyal Apple Customer since 1988 & it seems that the Quality of Apple's software has gone down siginificantly the past couple of years.

Frustrated,

Brad
