Unable to update Mail server

Hello, I'm unable to update the IMAP server on my mail account. It is a domain address. I'm stuck in a loop.

1. I changed the servers (IMAP and SMTP) in Mail -> Prefs -> Accounts

2. I get an OS notification that I have created a *new* Mail account. This takes me to Internet Accounts in System Preferences, where I have to turn on the "new" account.

3. When I turn on the "new" account in System Prefs, it still shows the old IMAP server under Advanced. When I change it to the new server, I get the OS notification all over again (repeat step 2). Also, in Mail prefs, it reverts to the old IMAP server after making the System Prefs Internet account active.

I have already turned off iCloud for all my devices. This made the server settings work, but when I turned iCloud back on, the problem also turned back on. 

How do I get out of this loop?!?!
