FaceTime in UAE

I live in Dubai UAE and I want to use FaceTime to stay in touch with my uncle but, ovecourse, it's blocked. Does anyone know a way to be able to use FaceTime in the UAE without doing anything illegal! And if anyone who works in apple and could get the word of this to someone who could change this, please do!

Right, we bought it here in the US so it has FaceTime.   So if he is on a wireless we can use Skype or FaceTime.  We use Skype a lot because sometimes one or the other of us is not on wifi (usually me) and Skype works on 3G also.  With either one he has to use a VPN though.  He has used StrongVPN and is now on another (I forget which).  You will need to do some searching to find one that works best where you are.  StrongVPN didn't work well for him while in Istanbul so he had to change.

Be aware that most VPN providers will run some checks on you to make sure you aren't a spammer.  I suggest you call them and talk to their tech support before inning up.  Although every one we have used through the years has a money-back guarantee.

Good luck.

No.

Apple is not responsible for this, the UAE government is responsible for this, so you need to take it up with them.

It is blocked on iPads sold in the UAE (and a few other countries in that part of the world) by the device's serial number - so it cannot be installed on those iPads via iOS updates either.

can you please write for me the code of your ipad

I need to see

does it end with : E/A or P/A

If you bought your iPad in the UAE you won't have the app and you're out of luck.  If you bought your iPad elsewhere and have the app you will need to use a VPN that has servers in another country.  This routes your calls through these servers.  You can use Skype though.  You will still need the VPN but it does work.  Mt husband travels to the Mid-East a lot and we use Skype almost daily with his VPN.

I do not understand something could you please explain it more to mee ..

If my Ipad is brought from US or Singapore .. and I'm living in UAE

this will not let me use facetime?

Oh.. so ypur husbend brought it not from UAE but still can't call you on facetime while he's in UAE ?

I will search about the VPN .. sorry still don't know much about ipad

I bought my iPad in the auK so it does have the app, but it didn't work. I found out it works fine from UAE to the UAE but outside it doesn't. I downloaded VPN Express and that got it to work, but, it's too slow. My Internet is slow without a VPN! A VPN just makes it 10 times slower. And yes, skype works perfectly! I think because skype uses an encryption that etisalat can't block. Thank you so much for your help guys! I'm getting finer optics soon so my internet should be slow anymore... I hope

Hopefully you will get better Internet soon.  As for VPNs we have tried several.  Some are better than others and some are good in one country but not another.  If you try the VPN thing again I suggest you do some google searches for folks in the UAE to see which works best there.

Good luck

If anyone is wondering why Facetime isn't working, even with a VPN, I know what is going on. Here are some email replies from Witopia (VPN) support:

"On your computer, the facetime protocol is packetized and is transported over the net by wrapping them in an html packet.  On the phone this does not happen from what we can tell.  We have been testing, and from what we can see the packets are sent outside the html stream, therefore are not seen by the vpn and encrypted in the vpn when on a mobile device."

"We have tested it here in the USA also and it is not going through the vpn as it is not web traffic.  So, if it is working, are you connecting to someone that is using it on their computer and so they are using packetized traffic over the web, vs people that are phone to phone.  Phone -> phone vs phone -> computer is different."

Conclusions:

1. Computer to iPad works with VPN.

2. iPad to computer works with VPN.

3. iPad to iPad is not going to work, even with VPN.

This is dissapointing, obviously. Even so, we can adapt to make it work.

I am a US resident living in Dubai and will be returning to the US in a few months.

I am excited about the iPhone 6 and would like to buy it in UAE, but I understand that iPhones purchased in UAE via an authorized apple reseller does not have the Facetime App or the functionality (via contacts).

My apple id is registered in the US (with my US address and credit card info). I currently have a iPhone 5 purchased in the US which has Facetime. Although the carrier blocks Facetime, I am able to use it, if i turn on my VPN service.

My questions are -

1 -  Since my apple id is registered to the US, if i reinstall iOS (US version. Maybe use VPN if that helps), will it have facetime?

2 - If i restore from backup (iPhone 5 backup which has Facetime), will I get Facetime in the iPhone 6 ?

3 - In the event that #1 is not possible, Can i get Facetime when i switch the sim card to AT&T when i return to the US.

Thanks

1 - No.

2 - No

3 - No

the VPN solution is not a 100% effective and it depends on the device, in case of iPhones and iPads(that's using a Sim card )

--->>>  the moment you place a sim from a different country and restart the device you will find the app as long as the sim is active and you can make and receive calls on it ( Roaming has to be active as well )
