non apple apps not showing in recent apps

I've just upgraded iPad Pro (model ML3L2LL/A) to ios11, and only Apple apps will show up in the "recently used" section of the dock.  apps like OneNote do show up there on ipad mini 4.

I tried turning the setting on and off, with a hard reboot between, and also Reset All Settings.  neither made a difference.

How do I get the non apple apps to show up?

doh!  just worked it out.  Apps that are already in the main section of the dock don't show up in the recent section.  if I move apps off the dock, they do then show up in the recent section.
