how to tell if earpods are counterfeit

I purchased lightning earpods from groupon.  They were supposedly sent from mac warehouse.  They seem low quality.  I'm trying to determine how to tell if they are real or counterfeit.  They came out of the package and the cable has crinks in it near the earpiece.  I don't recall apple cables being that flimsy.  Maybe the new stuff is poor quality.  Any info appreciated.
