Recovering Contents of Hard Drive (MacBook Pro ...

Hi, my MacBook Pro 13" (mid-2012) was broken in the point of almost no return so I have decided to replace it. Fortunately the hard drive was left unharmed and Apple managed to extract it from the laptop. Does anyone know a way for me to have access to the contents of the hard drive? The staff suggested me to get a hard drive case. Is there any recommendation? What confused me is when I asked another staff about it, he said getting a case won't solve it and instead I should got to a data recovery centre. Is this true? What should I do ?
