How to recover files?

I purchased a new Macbook Pro in February 2015 that I used mainly at home for work purposes. I never had any issues with my Macbook, until last week when I had unknowingly contracted an adware after downloading a supposedly Adobe flash drive to stream a live sporting event.

This adware caused a dozen pop ups to appear every time I opened and closed a website.

I am ignorant when it comes to computer technology, so I watched a few Youtube videos that suggested how I can remove a malware from the Macbook.

Per one Youtube video, I deleted and trashed the following:

-Cache (all the files)

-Extensions folder (all the files)

-Input methods folder (was already empty)

-Launch Daemons folder (all the files)

-Launch Agents folder (all the files)

When I tried to restart my Macbook, it would not boot.

Prior to this, I did not backup my Macbook. However, I have stored 90% of my files in either Dropbox or OneDrive. The files that I did not backup and would like to recover are my music in Itunes and my photos/videos in Photo.

I read that I could salvage my file from an unbootable Macbook by going into recovery mode (command + R), selecting Disk Utility, and creating a backup file using an external hard drive.

Going into Disk Utility, after clicking several buttons, I can see all my files and applications, but they are locked so I cannot view or move them.

This is where I am currently at and do not want to proceed and do something foolish.

Am I on the right step to recovering my files from my unbootable Macbook using an external hard drive? Or is there an easier, better method?
