Why is the desktop on my screen minimized when I open it?

If you mean that when you launch an app, it is minimized, that is normal. If you quit the app with your preferred view, it launches the way you viewed it last time.

I probably worded my question wrong because I'm not too sure of computer vocabulary.  The problem is that when I open my computer, sign in  and click on Safari or Google Chrome - the window that comes up with the search bar doesn't cover the entire screen it covers about 1/4 of the screen -  I have to hit the green button up in the left hand corner to expand the (screen with the search bar) to cover the entire desktop.  It used to open up entirely but for some reason it stopped and I don't know what to do so I don't have to expand it myself. My preferred view is to have the screen covering the entire desktop when I use safari or google chrome. Thanks for your answer.
