Mail Problem in Adding Account

I am trying to add a new charter.net email account to Apple Mail on a Mac Mini running Sierra. I put the address and the password into the "Add a Mail Account" dialogue for "Other Providers" and click "Sign In." I get a spinning icon that never goes away and thus cannot sign in and thus cannot add the account. What to do?

Pain in the rear, but not impenetrable; it looks like I've got it.  The problem is that mail is failing to contact the SMTP (outgoing) server on the port they specify, and I think what's causing Mail to just "sit and spin" is that combined with what is probably DNS records configured differently than what mail is expecting.

Anyway, this should make it work for you:

  1. Setup the junk IMAP account like before.  Click "Next" and let it error out, as before.
  2. On the next screen, plugin your Charter account info, as before, but this time, leave the bogus name in the "Outgoing Server" field and click "Sign In". Screen Shot 2017-10-13 at 08.58.32.png
  3. It will try and error out, but will finally allow you to save settings.  Click "Next" to save them.  Screen Shot 2017-10-13 at 09.00.56.png
  4. Back in the main Accounts window, you will see an entry for Charter in the left pane.  Click it, then click "Server Settings on the button across the top.  Uncheck the boxes for "Automatically manage connection settings" for both Incoming and Outgoing mail servers, then setup your server names, ports, and SSL settings like I have them here.  Mine finally errored out on the password, which is both expected and good - that indicates it contacted the server, but couldn't login with username "me" (I'm pretty sure "me" isn't a valid user account on their servers ;-) ).  Get this, and you should be gold.

All of those settings come from the Charter/Spectrum doc linked to earlier.

Try it, good luck and let us know how that goes or if you have any questions.

Che,

Just a few questions to get started:

  1. Do you have any other accounts currently configured in Mail?
  2. Can you create another user account on your Mac (or do you already have another account) and can you try adding your Charter account to Mail under that user?
  3. Where were you when you tried this?  Were you at home or at work?

The answers will help with troubleshooting.  Let us know!

Yes, several. Including one "other" account with sonic.net.

Tried with another user and have the same problem.

At home.

Ok, so we'll try to stay away from your other accounts then.  If this still didn't work with another Mac user account, then it sounds like a system problem, not a user config issue.  And if you're running into this at home, then chances are you don't have any firewall settings blocking access to Spectrum's servers.

I just tried a bogus charter.net account to see what happened, and I got the same result.  The good news is, I think I found a workaround.  Instead of entering your Charter email address, enter something completely bogus - frank@hotdog.com or whatever you like.  Mail will give up quickly and take you to the advanced settings window.  From there, change all the settings to your Charter account, and hopefully you will be able to connect.

If you need reference material for the advanced settings, it looks like everything you need is here:

https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/adding-new-account-apple-mail/

Give that a whirl and let us know how it goes.

The bogus account took me to this setting dialogue and I put in the correct information after the "unable..." message associated with the bogus account. Then click on sign in ... and the same thing happens.

Thanks for the attempt but it still seems impenetrable....

BTW, I asked for help from Charter/Spectrum support and they said "Ask Apple." And I don't find anyone else with quite the same problem. Unless you think it won't help, I think I'll do a safe boot tomorrow and see if that makes for any progress when inputting in Mail.

Wow, that was a hassle, and only solvable with your (for me) arcane knowledge of Mail! Very appreciative of your sticking with me and getting it set up.
