2012 iMac 27" massively slow

For a long time now, my iMac has been almost uselessly slow in several areas.  For example:

  • Bootup: ~ 30 minutes
  • Fast User Switching: ~30 minutes for first switch to another user, ~5 minutes after that
  • New Application Launch: up to 1-2 minutes in some cases (basically, uncomfortably slow)
  • Inexplicable beachball for several minutes at a time

I have recently installed High Sierra, naively hoping this would help, but it has not.  No noticeable speed up in those areas. Here are some things I've done to try to speed this thing up:

  • Literally wiped the HDD clean, reinstalled from the ground up (restored user profiles/data only from backup)
  • Done the standard "clear PRAM" and "clear NVS"
  • Been through several rounds of etreCheck-guided cleanups on system and user accounts (there are 5 user accounts)
  • HW checks on HDD and RAM

I've long suspected that my problem is one of:

  1. Stale/dead/incompatible system or user configuration files/settings
  2. Bad HDD
  3. Bad RAM

For #2 and 3, I've done hw checks, and everything seems to come back roses.  However, I still am suspect of one of those 2.

For #1, my complete rebuild from the ground up should have fixed that.

I am definitely at wits end here...Any help provided is appreciated.

I suspect a failing HD, you may want to book an appointment at your local Apple Store and have it professionally diagnosed and tested.

I suggest temporarily disconnecting your external WD storage device(s) then reboot the iMac to see if you experience the same sluggishness.

Performance issues like you describe can result from a hard drive that is experiencing read errors. If you haven't already done so, click on the Etrecheck SMART Report in the Disk Information section to see whether there are any SMART errors. No matter the result, it's always a good idea to make sure you have at least one good backup of your data.

It looks like you recently upgraded to High Sierra. Open the Activity Monitor application to see if your iMac is performing any CPU intensive tasks that might explain the issue. In most cases sluggishness following a recent OS upgrade is temporary and should resolve itself.

Please let us know what you find and how you resolved the issue. Good luck.

  • Interesting thought on removing the external storage...why do you suggest that?  Is that a known sore spot in these situations?  I am trying that later on and will let you know.
  • I have checked the SMART report...no issues
  • I've been watching activity monitor for years as I track this issue, and I've never spotted anything that was blowing up the CPU or the r/w on the disk

Thank you so much for your help on this!  We're going down the external drive road for now...

Thanks for the help here...yes, I have also suspected my drive was a problem for the last couple of years (length of this issue).  Unfortunately, Apple Store is really a viable option.

Any ideas on how I might diagnose it myself?
