Can't use remote control to adjust volume

Hi,

 

I've plugged a stereo into my MacBook Pro using a headphone jack so that I can listen to music.  Unfortunately, I am now limited by the maximum volume on the MacBook, ie. I can't seem to use the stereo's remote control to pump up the sound beyond what the boring MacBook settings allow.  Can anyone help?
