How do I transfer information on my current ext...

My old iMac (2010) with a WD external hard drive malfunctioned with a white screen.  After Apple was unable to help, we purchased a new iMac Sierra and Lacie external hard drive as backup.  How do I transfer any information from the old hard drive to the new hard drive when I can't see anything on the desktop of the old iMac?  I don't want to lose files if I can help it.  Many, but not all of the files are in the cloud.

Can you attach the old external drive to your new iMac? If so, you should be able to transfer the files between your external drives by using Finder.

Sorry to be dense.  I very much appreciate your help.  Can you give me a play-by-play of how to upload files from old external hard drive and then move them to the new hard drive?

Did the old computer happen to have a Time Machine backup EHD? If so then it's SUPER easy. Just use Migration Assistant which is already pre-loaded on every Mac. All you need to do is connect the TM EHD to the new computer via USB cable and then launch Time Machine and it follow the on-screen directions.

You can learn more in How to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support . If you were not using TM then remove the HD from the old Mac and put it in an enclosure (I'd recommend an OWC Mercury Elite Pro) and copy and paste files as needed.

Ok, there's a couple of things to make sure I understand what you want to do, so let me ask a few questions first, and then, I can provide you with how to copy files between both external hard drives.

1. Are you only interested in the files that are on the old external drive or also the files that may be on you old iMac?
2. If only the files on the external drive, then we will use the Finder app to transfer files between it and your new external drive. If both, then we will need to look at the other methods available to you to attempt to retrieve files off your old iMac.
