restoring email

I was helping someone with their Mac Mail who has an EarthLink email account.

He has a pop account, and I tried to set up an IMAP account in addition.

I moved a few mail messages one by one from the pop account inbox to the IMAP account inbox. It seemed to work, so I highlighted the rest - about 70 emails. They spanned a period of about six months.

I dragged those into the IMAP inbox. I got an error, I think it said that the password was wrong and that they couldn't be moved. He corrected the password, however, rather than returning to the inbox, most of those emails just disappeared.

As far as we know, they ended up in the trash (he saw a few he recognized). However there are 25,000 other trashed emails, so if they're there, they're all mixed in, and he doesn't remember all of the missing emails.

Time machine was the was the last run was last run three months ago, so that's no help. I spoke with Apple support and EarthLink support. No one knows how to restore those 70 emails.

I thought there might be a time stamp as to when they were moved to trash. Can't seem to find confirmation on this.

If they are in the trash, does anyone know how to identify the 70 emails out of the 25,000 that ended up there?
