time machine looks ok but cannot step back

My TM looks like it works (e.g. says last backup was 30 min ago) but when I enter TimeM to try and revert to a prior file date, I cannot shift the time only Cancel buttons shows

Also when I press Option and TimeM in bar, the Verify option stays grayed out.

Not sure if this also part of it but in Finder, the volume "iMac TM" does not appear

Suggestions please?
