how do i take a screenshot of a portion of the desktop?

Command-Shift-3Capture the screen to a file
Command-Shift-Control-3Capture the screen to the Clipboard
Command-Shift-4Capture a selection to a file
Command-Shift-Control-4Capture a selection to the Clipboard

Or open Grab app from Utitlities.

Hope that helps.

command, shift, 4. The cursor will change to a crosshair. Thenn define the area on the screen that you want to capture by holding the mouse button down and moving the cursor. The area you define will always be a rectangle.

I tried using command, shift 4.  It make the sound of capturing the rectangle, but I can't find where to access it.

comand, shift, 4, then hold the mouse down. The cursor becomes a cross hair. Use this to define a rectangle. You have to hold the mouse button down and move the mouse.

If you do not move the cross hair, you will end up with just one point. So you will hear a shutter sound but not see anything because nothing was captured. You have to hold the mouse button down while you move the mouse.

Did you try pasting it into another app? You get stuff from clipboard by pasting.

I tried to paste it in word usig command v and through the menu but neither one worked.  The menu did not offer the option to paste.

Then there's always the Grab.app in Applications>Utilities.

It will be saved to your ~/Desktop.

Hold command+shift+4. Drag the cursor around the area you want to capture. To capture the active selected window, hold command+shift+space.
