imac shuts down during start up

my late 2013 27 inch imac shuts down during start up 1/3rd of the way through loading bar. can start it using command+r. im actually using it right now to type this. just wont start up normal. cant "repair disk" in utilities and cant redownload os because " disk is locked". please help!

If you started using COMMAND-R then you booted from the Recovery HD. Not sure how you used this to start the machine. Furthermore, you could not access the disk if it is locked as you say Disk Utility reported. Do you get this same error when booted from the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility First Aid?

Repair the Drive for Sierra and El Capitan

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Please do the above and report what happens. Also, report what is shown about your disk in the Disk Utility sidebar display.
