Top sites icon not active from an active webpage.

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)

Processor 1.6GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 G 1600 MHz DDR3

iOS Sierra 10.12.6

Safari Ver 11.0 (12604.1.38.1.7)

Until a few weeks ago, if I had a website open on a tab and wanted to leave that page and return to my top sites, I could click on the top sites icon on the top left of the screen. Now when I have a website open and click on the top sites icon, it clears the web address from the address bar, but doesn't change the page view back to the top sites. The address line clears and the page view stays on the website I was viewing instead of opening the top sites page. The only way I can return to my top sites is to open a new tab.

I've checked my settings and don't see anywhere to change anything that would affect how the top sites icon functions.

I would appreciate any help to make this function the way it did previously.

Has there been some change to the icon that it no longer works as it did prior?
