system preference icon with red dot

the system preference icon in my doc has a small red circle with a 1 in it. I open system preference and there is a red dot on notifications. I click on notifications and can find nothing that needs to be changed. I scroll thru all items and do not see anything that would indicate what is causing the red dot. What do I do? Sierra 10.12.6 iMac.

Right click the icon on the Dock and look to see what the red dot is indicating.
